Let's be honest - we can't hold baby 24/7. There will be a time when we need to put baby down (aside from his sleeping time) to do other chores, such as when you cook in the kitchen, shower or even just a brief trip to the toilet.
A playpen (or playard as it is more known about nowadays) lets you do just that - keep your baby safe and contained while you get a short break and go about with your daily chores.
1. What Is A Playpen/Playard?
Traditionally, a playpen is made up of several plastic panels joined together to form an enclosed play area on top of a play mat, as that shown in the picture left. Some may say they are no different than a baby gate, which yes, they may look similar and you can certainly use baby gates to achieve the same purpose, but specific playpens are usually more colourful with having animations/toys featured on its walls to stimulate baby's senses.
Nowadays, many playpens have evolved to that shown on the picture left, a rectangular area enclosed with mesh that is slightly elevated from the ground. Many are multifunctional as well, such as being a portable sleeping area or diaper changing area for baby on the go.
While modern playards as such provide a lot of convenience, they are mostly not able to provide a big play area like that of traditional playpens. We also think that traditional playpens are a better option for babies to learn to walk because they are sturdier, with the fences being placed firmly on the ground apart from giving baby a bigger area to roam about. Ultimately, when choosing your baby playpen, it goes down to what is your lifestyle and needs. Read on to find out what are some of the best play pen we'd recommend!
